Customized supplier of 600 Volt UL1015 AWG Wire harnesses and wires for waterproof Molex connectors.
Woodhead Watertite wiring products were first introduced almost thirty years ago as the first fully waterproof wiring products for heavy industrial use. When Molex learned of the special requirements for wire sets and connectors in the food and beverage industry, Molex redesigned a connector product family to provide a solution for the industry. Molex product design engineers looked to take the original Woodhead vulcanized rubber product and then use the new material that complies with FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 regulations. Tests have shown that vulcanized rubber has a wider range of temperature characteristics and is more resistant to severe wear than commonly used alternatives such as TPE (thermoplastic elastomer). It has better weather resistance and UV resistance, and better water resistance.

Molex previously released the Woodhead Watertite Extreme plugs and connectors for use in wet and harsh environment power applications carrying 120-600 VAC, up to 50 amps. Molex Global Product Manager Tony Quebbemann was the driving force behind the development of the connector and cordset. Woodhead’s original catalog number 14W47 has become an industry standard that everyone follows and is now used by virtually every watertight brand, which is indeed the case. Woodhead has retained this number as a high level reference number for the food industry and general industry, differing only from the more recent 14W47-P which was designed for use in the petrochemical industry. Both versions use the industry proven vulcanizate, the main difference being the addition of silicone to 14W47 making it ideal for food applications, while also offering improved chemical, abrasion and temperature resistance .

The development process took a full five years, incorporating field feedback from many users and extensive testing. Molex performed industry-standard testing, but this was done by continually reusing the same product. Molex didn’t just want to verify the product’s behavior under crush conditions, but performed a leak test immediately after the crush test. Molex realized that in the actual environment, there are also connectors on the ground, they will be stepped on, or run over by a car, and they will be exposed to moisture/moisture while being rolled over, so under these same actual conditions Trials were carried out on many products. The results of this trial focused on Molex’s legacy products, however, Molex’s desire to still provide a top-of-the-line performance product in the eyes of the user drove Molex to search for a better performing vulcanizate .

Molex research and testing results were combined with design changes, including a new advanced vulcanizate formulation, silicone rubber that meets and exceeds industry standard requirements, new compression nuts, and a new patented cable Seamless transition to cord set. From the beginning Molex embarked on this project with an eye toward the best solution, even if that meant changes in components. Molex has achieved what customers consider optimal; material improvements to 14W47 have proven to be backward compatible when paired with existing products. For example, customers are pleased to know that any combination of Woodhead Watertite connection products will pass the IP69K test regardless of the 14W47 used.

These products are relatively expensive to produce considering the hardening time and permanent deformation of the stamping. Unlike TPE, these components cannot be reheated and reshaped by remixing at the front end of the production process. Vulcanized rubber parts are shaped in a more permanent part, similar to a car tire, before they take on a durable, permanent shape. For cable jacket seals, Molex has created a natural water and particle barrier component to meet the familiar vertical hanging orientation of many of these products.

This new material has been licensed to include:
NSF Certification – NSF International has been assisting commercial organizations in the agricultural, processing, food equipment, restaurant and retail industries for nearly 70 years to become familiar with the requirements of the food safety and regulatory environment.
JIS – Vulcanized silicone rubber is designed to meet the requirements of JIS Z 2801 for inhibiting bacterial growth.

UL Certification – UL is a global, independent safety science company with over a century of expertise in the innovation of safety solutions.

CSA Certification – CSA International has determined that a representative sample of this product meets the requirements of the safety standards issued by CSA for use in the Canadian market.

IP69K Rating – Excellent water ingress protection Designed for the most extreme washdown procedures, it can withstand high heat and high pressure water washdowns in addition to environments with excessive dust.

Woodhead can conduct independent testing that goes beyond industry standards and regulations. The purpose of this in-house trial is to represent real-world applications, and the trials are performed sequentially rather than as stand-alone trials of new products. Eight internal tests include: high temperature/high pressure water test (IP69K), low temperature test (refer to UL 50E), effective cleaning test (refer to ISO8296), wear resistance test (refer to IEC 60068-2-31), crush test (for UL 498), high pressure test after crush test (tested according to IP69K standard), immersion test after crush test and internal sealing test.
