According to the EIA/TIA standard, the M12 connector corresponds to the transmission technical conditions of the category 5 modular socket (RJ45). Using D coding prevents incorrect coupling with A coding (used for sensor and actuator wiring) and B coding (used on some fieldbuses).
There were no M12 connectors available for printed circuit boards until the surface mount terminated M12 connector. Surface mount termination facilitates the miniaturization of field devices.
